The digital age has brought about many changes, and personal branding is one of them. In a world where anyone can start a blog or create a social media profile, it has become more important than ever to have a personal brand, which is something I help my clients with. A personal brand allows you to control your own narrative and can help you stand out from the competition. In this post, I will discuss the importance of personal branding in the digital age and how you can go about creating your own brand that is authentic and unique.
In a sea of social media profiles, a personal brand can help you stand out from the crowd and attract attention from potential employers or customers. A personal brand is a way to market yourself and your professional accomplishments.
When creating a personal brand, it is important to consider what makes you unique. What are your values? What do you want to be known for? Once you have answers to these questions, start creating content that reflects your personal brand. Blog posts, social media posts and even videos are all great ways to share your story with the world.
A practical step to start building your personal brand is choosing a platform where you can begin curating an audience that best suits your talents. Make a commitment to post every single day for at least one year. Think about your strengths and how you can use them to your advantage. For example, if you are a great communicator or have a unique voice, starting a podcast could be a good option. If you have on-screen charisma or are considered funny, starting a vlog channel may be for you. If you are an amazing writer or a powerful storyteller, perhaps a blog is the best fit.

In addition, it is vitally important to select one social media platform that plays to your strengths and commit to it. I would recommend sticking to just one platform until you have mastered it before adding in another. I define “mastering” a platform as consistently posting quality content plus having your account growing daily on its own without much extra effort or energy. The end goal, however, should be to have a presence on all of the major social media platforms. This is because there will always be people who find you on one platform that might have never found you on another. We call this being “omnipresent” across a variety of channels.
As far as content creation, one thing I have found to be helpful is creating more long-form content and having your internal team or a virtual assistant turn this into multiple short-form pieces. This allows you to schedule a podcast, interview or vlog one time and have content for multiple weeks “chopped” down into bite-sized segments. Another content creation tip is to take advantage of the downtime you have when you’re on the go or traveling. With current smartphone capabilities, there is no reason why we shouldn’t have quality content to post. Taking a couple of minutes on the subway, at lunch or walking home from work to record a quick “tip of the day” can be the building blocks of a powerful online brand without adding too much stress or anxiety.
It is also important to be consistent in your branding, using the same language and imagery across all platforms. If done correctly, a personal brand can help you achieve your goals.
Creating a personal brand is about more than simply projecting an image of success and importance. To truly stand out from the crowd and succeed in today’s competitive world, it is important to develop a personal brand that reflects who you are as an individual and what you have to offer. This can be achieved through a variety of strategies, including creating your own personal website, participating in industry events and conferences, and consistently delivering quality work that showcases your skills and abilities.
By incorporating these strategies into your personal branding efforts, you can build awareness of your unique talents and qualifications, thereby establishing yourself as a true professional within your field. When a personal brand is built correctly, I believe it will go through five key phases of branding:
Phase One—Intention: This is where you will gain clarity on what problem you are solving, what solution you bring and what message you are carrying to the world.
Phase Two—Foundation: This is where you will build the foundational elements of your brand—social media, website, digital press, etc.—that you will drive traffic to.
Phase Three—Attention: This is where you will focus your efforts on driving awareness and attention to the brand you have been creating in phase two.
Phase Four—Conversion: This is where you will turn attention into paid dollars or convert the attention into whatever your end goal is, such as raising funds for charity, recruiting into your business, etc.
Phase Five—Retention: This is where you will retain those you converted over the long term. (Here’s a more in-depth analysis of these five key phases.)
Creating a personal brand can be a daunting task, but it is worth the effort. By following the tips I’ve outlined in this post, you can create a foundation for your personal brand and start to tell your own story. What are you waiting for? Start building your personal brand today!
